What is corrugated cardboard?

Corrugated cardboard is a multi-layered adhesive body consisting of at least one layer of corrugated core paper sandwich (commonly known as "knock sheet" or "corrugated paper") and a layer of cardboard (commonly known as "psoriasis"). It has high mechanical strength and can withstand collisions and falls during handling.

The actual performance of a corrugated box depends on three factors: the characteristics of the core paper and cardboard and the structure of the carton itself.

Classification of corrugated cardboard

According to different combinations, corrugated board can be divided into the following five types:
1) The paperboard consisting of a layer of core paper and psoriasis is called "Galpa Cardboard". The corrugated cardboard is generally used only for cushions, spaces and irregularly shaped objects.
2) The cardboard consisting of a layer of core paper and two layers of psoriasis is called "single hole cardboard".
3) Two-layer core paper is divided into three layers of psoriasis called "double pit cardboard". Double pit cardboard can be composed of pit papers with different pit widths and different paper qualities, such as "B" pit paper with "C" pit paper.
4) Three-layer core paper is divided into four layers of psoriasis called "three-hole cardboard".
5) Extra strong double cardboard is developed from single-deck cardboard. The middle layer of core paper consists of two thick core papers stacked on top of each other.

Fortunately, today we have been able to produce many different combinations of corrugated board with different qualities and strengths to meet the changing needs of the market.

Kind of pit pattern

The corrugated board can be further subdivided according to the size of the pit pattern on the core paper, ie its height and the number of pits per unit length. There are four kinds of paper core pits. The following table shows the paperboard produced by Mitsubishi and Langston pit machines.

Carton caused by thicker "A" pits has better top and bottom compressive strength than "B" and "C", but the thinner "B" is compared to "A" and "B" pits. The pit pattern has superior resistance to pressure. The "A" and "C" pits are used in the manufacture of cartons that are under pressure and packaged and require padding. The "B" pit pattern is suitable for carton manufacturing where capacity and space are important and stacking strength is less important. The "E" pit has the highest compressive resistance, but its shock absorbing ability is slightly inferior. It is mainly used on offset (color printing) corrugated boxes that carry heavy objects.

Core paper material

The larger the corrugated cardboard hole diameter, the stronger its rigidity. The toughness of the board is derived from the core paper layer without the need for hard fillers. This will reduce the weight of the board and its cost. Core paper can be caused by semi-chemical pulp, which provides the best paper strength, and recycled paper stock. The latter, because of its low manufacturing cost, is happy to be adopted by Hong Kong manufacturers. Although the paper strength is not as good as the former, it can be improved by adding paper grade starch to paper mills.

The pit pattern holds a certain space in the corrugated paper, and its role is also very important. It can withstand flat pressure, lateral pressure and other irregular pressures.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis constitutes the inner and outer layers of corrugated cardboard, and its function may be structural and/or decorative. Each layer of psoriasis provides a variety of characteristics for the cardboard, and these characteristics can be expanded through the process of bonding, waxing and other processing.

Inspiration from structural strength

If the strength of the carton does not meet the requirements, it is necessary to find out the problem. Do not take for granted that all cartons must be thickened and hardened. It is important to know that making such "fed" cartons is costly. Therefore, the problem cartons should be studied and remedy. The scope of inspections has many aspects, such as whether the carton is damaged in transit, whether the stacking method is defective, whether the loading is excessive, and whether the handling is adequate; perhaps, the problem is traced back to the storage method of the empty box.
When you take all measures to reduce losses, do not confine yourself to the narrow concept of "thickening and hardening." Remember, changing the shape of the carton is often the same thing!
